Griffin was assigned to the State Attorney’s office as a special investigator. Due to frequent burglaries over a three year period, Sergeant Griffin, along with other officers, were assigned to a special stake out in the area of the burglaries. On the second night of the stake out, while police were inside a local residence, two suspects broke into the home. One suspect was armed with a shotgun, the other with a rifle. A gunfight ensued between the officers and suspects and Sergeant Griffin was struck in the crossfire by another officer. Sergeant Griffin succumbed to his gunshot wounds.
A total of eight arrests were made in connection with the burglaries Sergeant Griffin and other officers were investigating.
Sergeant Griffin was survived by his wife and daughter.
