Officer Ellis was killed in a motorcycle accident on Main Street just south of the Trout River Bridge. Officer Ellis was escorting a wedding party when his motorcycle apparently started sliding after running over a patch of sand. It is unknown if a vehicle in the procession struck Officer Ellis after he lost control of his motorcycle. Officer Ellis was transported to the hospital, however, did not regain consciousness and succumbed to his injuries approximately an hour after the incident.

Officer Ellis had served with the Jacksonville Police Department for 12 years and was survived by his wife and two children.
