Detective Barber and Constable L.M. Dyal were shot and killed when they responded to a disturbance at a local barber shop located at 1515 Davis Street. As they entered the shop the suspect opened fire from inside, striking both officers. Detective Barber died at the scene. Constable Dyal was transported to a local hospital where he died three days later. The suspect was shot and killed by a third officer.

Detective Barber was survived by his wife and two children.
